We visited the Hutong District (old traditional Chinese houses) and Prince Gong Mansion. We did the tour on a rickshaw. Add one more thing to the list of different transportation choices we have used in Asia.
The Hutong District was interesting as government pays for rehabilitation of these old districts but they do it in the original style. We would have never known many of the houses were new unless they told us. We thought the tour was going to be very touristy but turned out great as we got to visit a local home in the area and talk to the lady who lived there. Many of these homes in the Hutong District were heated off of coal until just before the Olympics. In order to curb some pollution, the government paid for and installed electric heating and still pays for most of the bill to this day.
One thing we did notice everywhere we went in China is that most places are not heated. Everywhere you go, including restaurants you have to wear your parka inside. We were FREEZING all the time!!
