Welcome to the Dump Part 2

So here is what it looks like just outside the school....

This sign says "DANGER" and those are all live electric
wires where people have tapped into the lines illegaly

Kids waving to us from their shanty

So from here they took us to the new school that is being built. Now as you can see this school is being build from 40ft used sea containers. This building is the only one of it's kind and will be put in the Guinness Book of World records as the highest building made out of sea containers (3 floors). Now you might ask....why would they build it out of sea containers. Well the answer is simple, it costs 1/4 of what it would cost to build a building out of concrete. Now, in order to build this building, they had to put pilings in the ground for the foundation. They had to put these pilings down 30 meters (about 100 feet) in order to hit solid ground! The school is truly being built on trash. This school will be amazing when it is completed.

Here is what is just outside the school....

This is all landfill and as you can see is
smoking....part of the breaking down process

If you look out the other side of the school, this is what you see.

As you can see it's shanty town and some of the shanty's are hanging out over the water. You can see all the trash in the water. This water goes straight out to Manila Bay - don't go swimming out there! The water in the river is bubbling as the methane gases that are releasing from the dump as it breaks down and the pipes go straight into the river.

So if you think this is bad...it only gets worse from here on out.

To be continued......
